Fall of 2013 is well underway and there are several notable changes in the Gordon Library!
First, we welcome two new staff members:

Bijan Esfahani is the Assistant Director for Research and Instruction and Tom Hohenstein is our newest Research and Instruction Librarian. Bijan relocated from California just a few weeks ago. Over the summer, Bijan served as project manager for a grant led by University of California Davis to deliver learning sessions on using reliable web-based consumer health information to rural public libraries throughout California. Most recently, he served as a clinical research liaison at Stanford University’s School of Medicine. Bijan also spent 6 years in Doha, Qatar, serving in leadership roles in libraries at Carnegie Mellon University and Weill Cornell Medical College. He has taught courses in library and information science at San Jose State University, Foothill Community College, and the University of Maine. Bijan completed his graduate studies in information science at San Jose State University, and his undergraduate studies in psychology at the University of California Davis.

Tom Hohenstein assists students, faculty, and staff in conducting research through individual, team, and classroom based consultations. He is a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College (B.A), Simmons College (M.L.I.S.), and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (M.A.). Tom is also a commissioned officer in the Army National Guard. Previously, Tom was the Pound Project Librarian at the Harvard Law Library, where he supervised the relocation of over 70,000 items to an offsite storage facility. He also served as a Teaching Assistant at UMass-Amherst, instructing students in classes ranging from the History of Baseball to the History of Modern Latin America.
We also restructured the library by creating two new departments and reassigning staff after Lora Brueck’s retirement on July 31, 2013. Effective August 1st, Donald Richardson became Associate University Librarian, and now heads Collections and Systems Management. His staff includes Martha Gunnarson, Jackie Mushinsky, and Elenore McGourty. A search is underway to find a Collections Assessment and Development Librarian. Jessica Colati was promoted to Assistant Director for Curation, Preservation, and Archives. Margaret Anderson and Kathleen Markees are part of that group. Debbie Bockus, Assistant Director for Access Services, leads the group at the Information Desk. Tressa Santillo, Judy Fallon, Ginny Julian, Robin Benoit, and Lynn Loftus work in that department.
We also learned that the Gordon Library will receive $300, 000 in grant funding this academic year from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to support environmental and safety improvements in the Library’s Archives and Special Collections Wing.
